Climate Change Legislation, Drill Moratorium and National Ocean Policy

"I will make the case for a clean energy future wherever I can, and I will workwith anyone to get this done, and we will get it done." President Obama, June 2, 2010

Coopers Island in the Beaufort Sea, Alaska

July 19, 2010,

President Obama calls for Nationals Ocean Policy with Executive Order. Thanks for your letters!

Background

Assist President Obama in building the political and constituency support needed for legislation that will dramatically alter the way Americans fuel their homes and cars. His legislation will include placing a price on carbon.

In the photo, I am standing on the shore of Cooper's Island in the Beaufort Sea, 20 miles east of Barrow Alaska. These are the waters that President Obama has suspended planned exploration for oil in. Exploration also suspended in the Chukchi Sea to the west of Barrow. President Obama has canceled lease sales in the western Gulf of Mexico and off the coast of Virginia. He is taking actions to change the culture and expectations for the Mineral Management Service and its regulation of the offshore drilling industry.

We can do more. Please join with us in writing President Obama to ask him to reinstate a moratorium for all new offshore drilling. We strongly urge the President to lead a strong clean energy climate bill that features green jobs. And third, we ask President Obama to establish a national ocean policy.

We need today, more than ever before, comprehensive and well-coordinated ocean planning, responsible stewardship and appropriate regulations that will make sure ocean ecosystems and wildlife prosper for future generations.
