The Gerry E. Studds Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary has a marvelous diversity of marine life, including whales, sea turtles, fish, birds and cold water coral. The Stellwagen Bank Management Plan is a needed first step toward protecting and restoring this ecologically important area.

In the British Virgin Islands, after degrading all of Tortola's nine mangrove marine areas, Beef Island salt pond, creek, mangrove shore and coral reefs are all threatened by plans for a mega-yacht marina, golf course and oversized hotel--developments unfettered by BVI's environmental regulations.

What with resource extractions including over-fishing, nutrient run-off, bioaccumulation in animals of pollutants, invasive species, greenhouse gas build-up, ocean acidification, and climate change, right now would be the opportune time for ecosystem-based adaptive management and a national system of marine protected areas.
