The Ocean Based Climate Solutions Act (HR.8632), a comprehensive bill from Rep. Grijalva, is the much-needed bold legislation that reduces carbon emissions and increases the drawdown of carbon dioxide with photosynthesis. This bill promotes ocean health, bolsters the Blue Economy, and greens our shorelines while addressing climate change.
At the end of June, I was in Washington pushing for bold action to protect our ocean and coastlines, I had no idea I’d end up meeting the Green Lantern of Congress.
During a congressional hearing on the Ocean-Based Climate Solutions Act, Congresswoman Yvette Herrell (R-N.M.) tried to insult the bill’s author Rep. Grijalva, and said: “Chairman Batman, I will yield back.” Rep. Grijalva responded, “Chairman Batman? This is more Green Lantern kind of stuff!”

He’s right. After all, the Green Lantern harnessed the power of GREEN ENERGY to fight evil and bring planetary order to the galaxy. And who is standing in the way of the Green Lantern’s efforts to protect our ocean and precious coastlines?
The yellow lanterns of the Republican Party, of course. They harness the yellow power of fear to get their way. (Many Congressional Republicans continue to hide from the truth themselves, especially when it comes to the dire threat of climate change.)
We can’t let these jokers destroy our planet! We have to use all of our organizing power to get Congress to take bold action to protect our ocean.

Green Lantern Corp member Delegate Stacey E. Plaskett, U.S.V.I., has put forward H.R.660 – Shovel-Ready Restoration Grants for Coastlines and Fisheries Act. This bill includes $10 billion for Coastal Restoration Grants. To meet the urgent rising sea level needs, NOAA would receive $3 million to distribute to priority shoreline projects within 90 days!
I know seven of the eight Democrats on the Senate Budget Committee and am in communication to help legislate coastal restoration in a big, big way.
