Sperm Whales of the NE Canyons and Seamounts Marine National Monument
Sperm whales live in the new NE Canyons and Seamounts Marine National Monument. This national park area is 140 miles SE of Nantucket on the edge of the continental shelf on the outer edge of George’s Bank. A voyage to this far flung ocean realm found a dead sperm and nearly a dead boat captain. The whale had been killed by a ship strike. Fortunately, two live sperm whales were observed, exhaling and diving during a day at the underwater canyon. Yet, one third of the whales found dead makes clear we must do more to protect sperm whales with citizen science, monitoring, and to work with government for responsible management of the NE Canyons and Seamounts Marine National Monument.
